Puyehue Volcano

Patagonia – Dec 26, 2014 – Overland to Puerto Varas, Chile

from the Itinerary:

After breakfast today, we’ll bid farewell to Bariloche, board our motorcoach, and travel to Chile. We’ll stop for lunch en route. We’ll arrive at our hotel in Puerto Varas in the late afternoon and take a short orientation walk. This evening, dinner is on your own.

And now we take a long bus ride across the Andes to Puerto Varas in Chile for the next 2 nights. We drove through the Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi. This entire area is covered in ash from the eruption of the Puyehue Volcano in 2011.

When we cross into Chile, our bags were inspected by “sniffer” dogs looking for raw food and plants that have not been processed. We had been warned before leaving the hotel this morning. The penalty for declaring you have none of the banned items is US$200 on the spot!

After crossing the border, we stopped for lunch and to change to another bus with a new local guide and driver. Next to the restaurant was a Studebaker Museum (Auto Museum Moncopulli). We all got to tour the museum. Very interesting!

Our new “local” guide is a woman named Pilar. She will be with us for the next several days.

When we arrived in Puerto Varas we check in to our hotel and then were on our own for dinner. However, before dinner, we found a geocache in a park overlooking the city.
